How thick is your line?

  I love low resolution cameras
  Originally uploaded by dynamist.

I am almost always displeased with my eyeliner. I don't have a steady enough hand to do liquid liner, and my pencil lines always strike me as way too thick (or too thin). As ever, I am a woman of extremes.

How about you? Any tricks up your well-starched sleeves?

My legs are on fire and look like it

  Leg Shaving Party
  Originally uploaded by elle_rigby.

Here's the deal: I have very dark hair, and it grows fast. If I had my way, I'd shave my legs every day. As it is, even doing it every other day still leaves me with legs that burn all day and have tiny red dots all over them.

Yes, I use warm water on my legs first.

Yes, I use shaving gel.

Yes, I moisturize like crazy.

Also, I have a ton of bruises all over my legs, which is annoying, considering all the money I just spent on pretty summer dresses. I'm using arnica on the bruises, but still, is there any way - apart from not being a born klutz - to avoid bruising? Maybe I'm missing a mineral or something? Somebody please, help me.

Pretty feet in pretty shoes

  New dress
  Originally uploaded by dynamist.

I spent the weekend dress shopping, and boy did I get some beauties. I have never really been a big dress fan, not until the last year or so, after losing 100+ pounds and feeling a lot more confident about wearing them. This happily coincides with what seems to me to be a renaissance of unspeakably gorgeous dresses. The cuts and the prints are just fabulous. Perhaps I never noticed this before, but it seems a new thing to me.

My big problem, though, is that I walk a LOT, and all of my pretty shoes give me blisters before too long. Straps along the top of my foot and my toes are the worst. I have absolutely no idea how to prevent this.

I spotted Sofsole Soothe in the latest issue of O: The Oprah Magazine, but can't find an online retailer who will be selling it until May 25. Are there any other products out there that can help me? I am desperate. I have a closet stuffed with exquisite dresses, and I want to wear them all summer long. Please help!

Colourist in London?

Reader Liz writes with this heartfelt plea:

I've just been reading your website, having quickly logged on before going to bed about an hour ago to check out Shavata eyebrow shaping I am still sitting at my PC!

Anyhow, your website is great to read and I will be back to visit in more depth!

In the meantime, I'm wondering if you could recommend a good colourist, in London. Having had highlights for the last few years (the last 2 at Vidal Sassoon) my hair seems to be overloaded with colour. Although my colourist at Vidal is good, I feel I need to go somewhere where there is far more focus on getting a great colour (and healthy looking hair in the process).

Readers, can we help Liz? I wouldn't send her to Jubilee Salon, where I recently had my colour done, as the language barrier is pretty big and it sounds like Liz wants to be able to communicate easily and well about what she wants. (My situation was a much easier "Please make my hair the same colour as my eyebrows" one.) Who's got a great colourist in London?

What to wear to the Emmys?

Friend of Jack & Hill (and sister-in-law of Hill) Nancy Rommelmann is going to the Emmy Awards. Tell her what to wear.

My suggestion: The hot jumpsuit that Nancy's wearing here, with lots of bling, killer heels, and trashy eye makeup (lots of black liner, highlighter on those bones, and pale lippy). Everyone else will be looking same-y in the sort of vintage chic that Nancy's been working effortlessly well for years, falling all over themselves to look like a princess. Being the sexy black sheep is a more fun alternative.

Laundry Rug

BluelaundryrugphotoThanks to coolbusinessideas.com for this item about the Laundry Rug:

Wahoo! There’s an easy cleanup cure for dirty undies and socks littering the floor. Laundry Rug turns a lazy schlub’s messy habit into a carefree lifestyle choice. And unlike the Undy Rug, this form also has a function. Pile the clothes on the rug and – bingo – the rug transforms into a shoulder-carry laundry bag. Wrap ’em, bag ’em, and haul ’em to the laundromat. No more feeling hampered by a hamper.

I need to get one of these for Rick, who owns 70,000 pairs of tube socks, which both he and the dog enjoy distributing across the floor in engaging patterns.

Once upon a time, my friend Rob and I had one of those manic "wouldn't it be cool if" conversations in which we tried to design the perfect self-cleaning environment.  By the end of a long discussion of detritus-mulching floors and self-refreshing surfaces we realized we'd just invented something that already exists:  the woods.

Solid foundation required

While other makeup bloggers are trying to give up foundation experimentation, the fun for me is just beginning. The bottle of Trish McEvoy Even Skin foundation that I bought in LA in December has finally started to run out; for the last few months, I've been wondering when that would happen. I've been happy with that product, but I'm not paying London prices for it.

I've got combination skin - shiny but also dry - and want something that will give me good coverage without looking chalky or mask-y. Any suggestions?

The life of Manny Cure and how to extend it

ThumbMy last manicure was on April 18. Only my left thumb now shows any sign of that. Still, I find myself unable to give it up and bust out the nail polish remover. That thumb is so damned perfect, it seems a shame to erase all traces of its existence. (My manicure only cost $20, from a salon in Beverly Hills whose name I have never known - it's three doors up from my eyebrow guru's place, though, and produces consistenly good results. They even fixed my thumb once, for free, when I jacked it up immediately after I walked out of their salon. A pedicure is $25, and mine is still going strong.)

So how do you extend the life of your manicure? I usually slap on another layer of top coat a couple of days after my salon visit, and employ all the usual tricks (using spoons to open cans of soda, ruining my teeth by using them to open shampoo bottles, etc), but there must be better tricks out there than that.

By the way, all you women (and men - I know you're out there) who can give yourselves the perfect French manicure? I hate you. But don't let that stop you from leaving your manicure life extension tips in the comments!
